Choosing the right wig is really easy to do unless you have a larger head than normal, because standard size wigs do not really fit or slip on your head easily when you wear them.

This can be really frustrating for some people and some might even feel suffocated when they choose a wig that does not fit their large heads.

Here are the steps that will show you how to choose the right wigs for people with large heads.

Know Your Measurement

A large head is a broad term, so you need to further expand the term to a more specific reference.

Just like shopping for clothes where you browse for the perfect size that will fit your body, choosing the right wig also requires you to know your own measurement.

For women’s wigs, there are four basic wig sizes:

Child

  • 18 inches to 19.5 inches circumference
  • 12 inches front to back
  • 12.5 inches ear to ear

Petite

  • 20 inches to 21.5 inches circumference
  • 13.25inches front to back
  • 13 inches ear to ear

Average

  • 21.5 inches to 22.5 inches circumference
  • 14 inches front to back
  • 13.5 inches ear to ear

Large

  • 22.5 inches to 23.5 inches circumference
  • 15.5 inches front to back
  • 14 inches ear to ear

Now, this might sound confusing and all, but it is quite easy to understand. Once you have measured your own head, everything will be really easy.

So, how do you measure your head? Here are simple steps to do that:

Step 1:

Start by pulling and tying your hair up and away from your face with a clip or hairband. You can try using a cloth headband to hold your hair back in case your hair is short.

Step 2:

First, you need to measure the circumference of your head. This should measure the distance around your hairline.

Using a cloth tape measure, start at the center of your front hairline and bring the tape around to the nape of your neck then back up to your hairline, making a circle with the tape measure.

Mark where the tape ends and use the information above to check what circumference size you have.

Step 3:

Next, you need to measure the length of your forehead down to your nape.

In order to determine where your nape is, look up slightly and place a finger on the natural crease at the back of your head where your skin folds as your neck bends.

You’ll want to have the bottom part of the wig to sit in this area so that your wig will not move when you move your head back in any way.

Place the measuring tape on the center of your hairline at the top of your head, and bring the tape down to your nape.

Step 4:

Lastly, you need to measure ear to ear. Hold the end of the measuring tape at one ear and bring it across the top of your head, then stop at the other ear.

Mark where the tape ends and use the information to check what ear to ear size you have. Please take note that this is the most important measurement.

Choosing The Right Cap Size And Type

After you have finally measured the size of your head, choosing the right cap size will be a breeze. You can just browse through for a cap size that will fit your large head entirely. After choosing the right cap size, you can also choose the cap type that you want.

Classic Wig Cap

This is the most basic cap that consists of cotton or nylon fabric. Classic wig caps are meant to be worn under wigs in order to flatten the braids underneath

This wig cap is not ideal for making wigs, quick weaves, or sew-ins since the material is not sturdy enough to hold the weight of extensions.

Hand-tied Wig Caps

This type of wig cap is 100% hand-tied and it allows each and every hair to move freely in order to give you a natural look.

Monofilament Wig Caps

A monofilament wig cap provides a natural look. The mesh-like material makes it look like the hair is growing from the scalp. With a monofilament wig cap, you can part or comb the hair in different directions.

Double monofilament wig caps are available for extra sensitive scalps. These wig caps are also 100% hand-tied and are more comfortable to wear.

Lace Front Wig Caps

Lace front wig caps are very popular. These types of wig cap are available for pre-trimmed and ready to wear forms.

Such a wig cap type is very easy to style and the closed layer of lace at the crown has vertical stripes with spaces that are open between the wefts.

Dome Wig Caps

Commonly worn under wigs or used for quick weaves, dome caps are also known to be used when making a wig.

It has a thick band that helps the wig stay in place. Also, this cap is thicker than other nylon wig caps and has spandex material that allows for stretching.

Dome wig caps are suitable for people with thick hair since they can perfectly flatten and hide thick hair.

Trying On A Wig

After measuring your head and choosing the right cap size and type, the next thing you need to do is to try on a wig.

When trying on a wig you should consider the perfect fit feeling. A wig should fit comfortably in your natural hairline, just a few inches above your eyebrows.

The wig’s back should come down to the nape and should not bend or move if you try to move your head backward.

If you do not feel like your head is being suffocated, don’t feel any pain wearing the wig, and it looks natural on your head, then it is the perfect size for you.
